So, some friends, who are in a band want a music video for their new EP coming out, ask you. Excellent, a chance to be creative, come up with many ideas and visuals that match the song. The problem, ideas cost money and you need paying for your time and unfortunately the band have no real money yet as they are just starting out so what do you do?
Its time for you to become the beg, borrow and steal filmmaker. From the photos you can see all the TVs in shot, which were recycled by me and the band, to make the background of the shoot. Equipment, I filmed this on a C100 with a 10mm fish eye, 50MM prime, and a 18 – 135, LED lights and a slider, all borrowed from work, friends and colleagues. Sound system, the band solved this problem getting a music tech friend to organize a PA system for the shoot. Never underestimate the friendships and comradely around rock music, people come through, help out or just want to be a part of something that has the opportunity to be something special. Next the UV paint, again the band bought all this and on the day we came up with the face designs and ways in which this was going to work in the video.
The shoot was just a day 8 hours in total and was great fun, chilled atmosphere and some epic ideas and creativity were flowing all day.
So the total for this entire shoot was £200 split between paying me, the paint and hiring the room. This split between 4 is almost a 0 budget music video
and what we achieved is pretty impressive. The turn around for the video was very short too, in total from filming to handing the product to the client was 7 days, (3 days working on the video in total)
“The Family” have been on the Radio 1 Rock Show, will be touring with “While She Sleeps” and their EP comes out May 19th (today) check them out and remember if this spirit of creativity is there you can make a video for next to nothing, it just takes some dedicated friends and band plus you offering a cheap rate. But sometimes money isn’t everything with the chance to be creative. (also, who know where this might lead?
